Hoy asistí a un coloquio, y el ponente planteó la siguiente pregunta:
¿Qué significa ser humano?

Expuso algunas tesis plausibles, por ejemplo:

¿Ser humano significa un ser inteligente?
¿Significa un ser que tiene conciencia?
¿Significa un ser que es capaz de distinguir entre lo correcto y lo incorrecto, entre el bien y el mal?
¿Significa un ser que tiene puede amar?

¿Qué significa ser humano?
El ponente preguntó una y otra vez.

Lo pensé durante su discurso, pero en el fragor del momento no pude concluir una respuesta definitiva a esa pregunta tan intrigante:

¿Qué significa ser humano?

Durante la tetulia, surgieron muchas conversaciones, más preguntas, opiniones contrarias, partidarios, una conversación como solo una pregunta así puede provocar. Hasta que, una a una, se fueron apagando las luces y el público se fue retirando poco a poco. Así que concluí que era hora de partir.

Así pues, me subí a la bicicleta y volví a casa por el tranquilo carril de bici que va a lo largo del río. Ese que se dirige hacia el oeste y pasa por el parque infantil, con todas esas mesas de ping-pong y los tantos árboles. Ese en el que la luna ilumina el camino justo al comienzo del paso subterráneo del segundo puente.

Y fue precisamente en ese momento, antes de entrar a ese paso subterráneo, y a la luz de la luna, cuando se me ocurrió preguntarle al único que tiene la respuesta definitiva.

Le pregunté a Dios: ¿qué significa ser humano?

Para cuando salí del paso subterráneo, ya tenía la respuesta. Su respuesta fue sencilla. La respuesta siempre había estado ahí, en su revelación escrita. No hay nada nuevo, simplemente:

Los seres humanos son los que fueron creados a imagen y semejanza de Dios.

I was today at a colloquium, and the orator asked the question:
What does it mean to be a human?

He gave some plausible theses, for example:

Does being human mean an entity that is intelligent?
Does it mean an entity which has consciousness?
Does it mean that it can tell between right or wrong, good or evil?
Does it mean that it can love?

What does it mean to be a human?
The speaker asked, over and over again.

I thought about it during his speech, but in the rush of the moment I couldn’t come up with a definitive solution to that puzzling question:

What does it mean to be a human?

During the after chat, many conversations arose, more questions, opposition views, supporters, a conversation as only such a question can usher. Until, one by one the lights were turned off, and the crowd slowly head out. So, I figured it was time to depart.

Thus, I hopped on my bike and rode back home along the quiet bike path along the river. The one that heads west and goes through the kids park, with all those ping-pong tables, and the many threes. The one where the moon shines the path right at the beginning of the under-path of the second bridge.

And it was at that very moment, under the moonlight that it occurred to me to ask the only One who has the definitive answer.

I ask God, what it is to be a human?

By the time I got out of the under-path, I had the answer. His answer was simple. The answer has always been there, in his written revelation. There is nothing new, simply:

Humans are the ones who were made in the image and likeness of God.
